questions needing answers, vol. 2

Liz: How does iTunes know what CD this is?

Me: I have no idea.

Liz: What?! You’re supposed to know everything!

————————–

Because I need to somehow answer every question that’s asked of me – I’m relaying it to the internet.  How does iTunes get the tracklist from a CD being imported?

Comment or Email Me with answers / advice / therapy because you know I do this kind of thing all the time.

questions needing answers – vol. 1

When you change the settings on a toaster, what happens exactly?

Is the bread kept in there longer, or does the heat become more intense?

No Bugs, No Hassles

Every time I see a pest control truck, I think back to last semester when I was the project manager for a Yellow Pages campaign through the YPA Collegiate Advertising Competition, and our client was Terminix.  I’m reminded of the absurd amount of research that we all did in the making of our campaigns, and of the fact that I know waaay more about pest control than is neccesary in the life of a twenty two year old kid (junior) adult.

This morning on the way to work, I drove by a Terminix truck and I realized that this very thing is what I like best about having majored in advertising: learning about all sorts of different things, all the time, even if it’s something as random as Terminix.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I came home from work today, worked out, showered then watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the movie. Because it was on TV, and I haven’t seen it in years.  (From 1990, it’s a cult classic.  You know the one.)

I think most people around my age have seen this movie.  The heroes in a half shell were quite popular back in my day.  Way back in the 90’s.

Watching it as an adult, It’s a very different film.  In addition to the overall ridiculousness of it as a whole, there are some serious plot holes.

I have a couple questions:

1.  Is anyone else profoundly disturbed by the flirtation / sexual tension between April O’Neil, Adult Human Reporter and Raphael, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle?  It’s just wrong on so many levels.  And furthermore, why does Raphael have a borderline Italian accent?

2.  What is Shredders’ motivation?  What’s up with The Foot Clan and the generalized hating of Splinter and our heroes?

I think the movie was based on the comic books, which I didn’t read.  I read everything was I was little.  Everything except comic books – so please fill in the blanks for me if you know.

COMPLETELY unrelated – some new detailsabout Jenny Lewis’s upcoming album have been released.  Most importantly, that it’s coming out in September.  Zooey Deschanel is featured on it, and she’ll be playing in New York in October.

This is all code for “Do you want to see Jenny Lewis with me in October?”

The Granny Smith by Apple

I work in web development – I spend hours and hours infront of a computer.  Yesterday, being Friday, I spent the hours from 9am to 5:30pm at my desk, computer-ing (verb? why not.)  I was looking at the computer and I thought, “I wonder why it’s called a ‘Mac.’  Where did that come from? Other computer names make sense.  Toshiba is obviously the name of a person, HP were people too I think.  Are people named Macintosh, or Apple?  Wait…yes they are.  Apple Martin – wow Gwenyth Paltrow.  What were you thinking.  You werent thinking.  Anyway, Macintosh.  Hmm…”

Apple.  Mac.  Macintosh.  Oh my god - a Macintosh is a kind of Apple.  The Macintosh Computer, by Apple.

It blew my mind.

So much so in fact, I hit up Sean on g-talk to confirm that my excitement was warranted.

Mindy: i literally just realized that “macintosh” as in the apple computer, comes from the idea of a macintosh apple. As in the fruit.
  my world is forever changed.
Sean: never even thought about it

Not as impressed.

I started thinking about the business meeting that took place during the naming of the “Apple Macintosh Computer” and the other possible names it could have potentially had.  I realized why they went with ‘Macintosh’ over the alternative.

The Granny Smith by Apple.  Drops January 24th, 1984.
